Mr. Thomas Debrowski, Mattel's executive vice-president for worldwide operations, recently held talks with officials of the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce on the recalls of Chinese-made toys.
Mr. Debrowski apologized for the damage the repeated recalls had done on the reputation of Chinese products. He admitted that the majority of the recently recalled toys were pulled off shelf because of Mattel’s improvement in design since January this year to upgrade safety level, not as a result of the problems of Chinese manufacturers. Mattel had a 25-year history of successful cooperation with China, and 65% of its products were manufactured in China, Mr. Debrowski observed. He expressed the wish of Mattel to maintain good relations with Chinese government and enterprises, and introduced the latest move of Mattel to tighten quality control and deal with the issue of lead paint in toy products.
Ministry of Commerce officials explained China’s policy on export quality control and expected Mattel to strengthen communications with Chinese government, industries and enterprises so that the two sides can work together and re-build consumer confidence.
