Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Makes a Special Trip to Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, Paying Last Respects to President Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan

2004/11/05

On November 5, 2004, Foreign Minister and Special Envoy of the Chinese government Li Zhaoxing made a special trip to Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to express condolences to new President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan and other UAE leaders.

Li said that President Zayed was an outstanding leader of UAE and enjoyed high reputation both at home and abroad. During his lifetime, President Zayed attached importance to developing relations with China and visited China in 1990. His decease is not only a loss to the UAE people, but also the loss of a close friend to the Chinese people.

China cherishes the friendly cooperative relations with UAE and believes its new leader will continue the unaccomplished cause of President Zayed. China would like to make joint efforts with UAE to push China-UAE friendly cooperative relations for further development.

Foreign Minister Li conveyed congratulations from President Hu Jintao upon Khalifa's election as UAE President. Khalifa thanked President Hu and the Chinese government for sending Special Envoy to take part in the condolence activities and indicated that his country stands ready to work along with China to promote the all-round development of bilateral ties.
